Village Halls & Community Spaces – outputs from the SRIP session on 1st November 2023
Curated by DTAS, SCVO and the Third Sector Interface (TSI) network, this session considered the diversity of village halls and community spaces across rural and island Scotland, from draughty, old venues to multi-purpose hubs and mobile venues, and everything in between. The Nevis Centre was offered as a case study, with a film highlighting the sense of community that exists within the walls of this vast building. Harriet Warman, Regional Screen Scotland, delivered a presentation on the Screen Machine, which has been in operation for 25 years.
Delegates were asked to think about their own local space and the role it plays in their community. Three main themes came out of discussions:
- versatility & inclusivity
- affordability & accessibility
- community connection & pride.
Presentations were delivered by:
- Jeremy Leggatt – Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE)
- Donna Young – Rural Housing Scotland

On 1st May 2024, SCVO hosted a conference aimed at those running village and community halls across Scotland. Delegates joined us both online and in-person at Birnam Arts to connect, share ideas, and inspire each other.
The event – which followed Village Halls Week in March – built on findings from the SRIP, also aligning with the annual English campaign on village halls to build cross-border momentum. Find out more
